Has anyone survived with anencephaly? Jaxon Buell came into this world with a rare brain malformation known as microhydranencephaly. Born with only 20 percent of his brain and missing a significant portion of his skull, his journey was not an easy one. But it was a miracle, not only because he survived with anencephaly but also because of his parents’ unconditional love.
Jaxon’s remarkable journey has been shared in various publications, including articles on dailymail.co.uk and today.com, touching the hearts of millions of people worldwide.
During the 17th week of Brittany’s pregnancy, doctors discovered abnormalities in Jaxon’s brain development through scans. They advised the parents to consider an abortion, as they believed the survival rate of children with anencephaly like Jaxon were slim.
Yet, Brittany and Brandon, Jaxon’s devoted parents, remained unwavering in their decision. Brittany carried Jaxon to term. On August 27, 2014, in Orlando, Florida, Jaxon was born at 37 weeks. The diagnosis confirmed that 80 percent of his brain was missing, with the cerebellum, responsible for movement and coordination, being most affected.
For three and a half weeks, Jaxon stayed in the neonatal intensive care unit, displaying a strong heartbeat and steady breathing. However, the doctors shared a grim prognosis: “There’s really nothing we can do for him. Take him home and make him comfortable,” they said.
The family embarked on a journey of learning to use a feeding tube, managing seizures and coping with moments of extreme fussiness. Despite the challenges, Jaxon radiated happiness and comfort. He didn’t rely on life support or struggle; instead, he enjoyed smiling and had good hearing, even if his vision was impaired.
While initially told that Jaxon wouldn’t live to see his first birthday, he defied all expectations and surpassed that milestone. Jaxon continued to amaze everyone, outliving every prediction made by the doctors.
Ultimately, after celebrating his fifth birthday, Jaxon peacefully passed away, cradled in his father’s arms, surrounded by his devoted parents and family. They had showered him with endless love, comfort, and countless hours of snuggles throughout his final days.
Jaxon’s story is a testament to the miracle of life. His family wants to inspire others, urging them to celebrate, value, and cherish every precious life, even in the face of darkness. Jaxon’s father, Brandon Buell, expressed:
There’s a miracle behind Jaxon’s story. We want to let other families know that even when there’s a dark situation, every life should be celebrated, valued, and cherished.
